Nintendo should have used a similar emulator. If you play the game on a Shield Portable emulator, it can look extremely beautiful. SM64 deserves a better port because imagine how low-res the game looks on a normal DS. There is no VC remapping, but you can change a few buttons ingame. If you try to run with Yoshi, the stylus forces you to slide off screen. The touch controls here are the worse of all time. You are alowed to use the analoge, but that gets hard to manuever because it is so unnatural. Well the cam is fixed in ds64, but the dpad centric controls are clunky. The N64 version wasn't all that hard to control aside from the bad camera. SM64 controlled terribly on the DS and this version is no acception. I bought all of the first party DS ports on Wiiu even though they lack proper optimization. I'm not trying to be cynical! I honestly would like to try this game in full. ![]() What I want to know is, does it get better? Is there something that I'm missing in the endgame or something? Are there totally new, full level-scale new areas? Else I think I'll just get the more focused, better controlling SM64. But maybe in a couch-and-living room kinda setting it clicks better? WIth the Wii U gamepad? And there's like 200 bunnies to catch this time around isn't it? The content feels like it's just there to use time. Collecting 5 silver stars? We already have 8 red coins per level dude. The extra levels feel like Mario 64 romhack levels and sometimes they feel like padding. I remember there's a lot of what seems padding (by padding I mean, marginal additions to the game). Either do an original idea with full touchscreen controls or do a traditional game focused on the first screen.Īnother point: the extra content. I also think those designs haven't aged well, and DS developer wised up to that very soon. Like "hey we didn't know what to do with the second screen so here's a freakin map!" level of design. Not a very strong argument.Īlso a lot of the conventions in design, for the UI and the game, reek of launch DS game. People praise the mini-games but come on -the minigames were cool in 2004 when touch-screen gaming was still terra nulius and everybody was excited about new hardware with a new and exciting control scheme, but they're very shallow, and in the end, mini-games small diversions, little additions that were originally tech demos. I remember playing it slightly in 2010 and dropping it because of the lack of comfort of the small dingy DS screen and the controls, and also how meh some of the extra content was. Might as well tackle the new content in the remake, right?Ĭontrol issues aside (yeah, I know, run button, no analogue stick, let's put that past us for this discussion), however, I think the game doesn't really hold up in this day and age. The thing is, I'd like to revisit it by playing SM64DS on the Wii U VC. So coming off the high of pannenkoek and his 0.5x A presses extravaganzas, I've been really itching to replay Super Mario 64. ![]()
